Congratulations to Samantha Hunt for having her novel The Invention of Everything Else shortlisted with the work of five other fiction writers for the 2009 Orange Prize. The prize is awarded annually for the best work of fiction by a woman writer from anywhere in the world. The author is the sister of singer-songwriter Amy England of Nantucket. She read from her work in The Great Hall of the Nantucket Atheneum in 2008 sponsored by Nantucket Bookworks.
The Invention of Everything Else deals with the last days of Nicola Tesla, the pioneer researcher and inventor who was responsible for many of the most important developments in applied electricity in the early twentieth century. The other books shortlisted got this year’s Orange Prize are Ellen Feldman’s Scottsboro, Samantha Harvey’s The Wilderness, Deirdre Madden’s Molly Fox’s Birthday, Marilynne Robinson’s Home, and Kamila Shamsie’s Burnt Shadows. Recent winners of the Prize are works by Zadie Smith, Lionel Shriver, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Ann Patchett.
